- THE MESSAGE EDITOR
- ==================
-
- Preliminary documentation
-
-
-
- This document describes the use of DUTCHIE's editor program as
- an external message editor under OPUS or with Fido. The
- full DUTCHIE package incorporates a full point system.
- Please refer to DUTCHIE's documentation if you want to know more
- of DUTCHIE. Sysops should investigate DUTCHIE as it will give
- them the possibility to extend their services a great deal.
-
-
- THE PRICE
- ---------
-
- Ah well, I could make this product share ware, but why bother.
- It is free for all non commercial applications. Restriction
- is that it must be used in a private situation, that is no
- government building, no firm, whatever. Only running on your
- privately owned machine in a private home is allowed. I
- have put a lot of work in this just to give you the pleasure of
- using it. If there is money to be made on this it should go
- to me don't you think ? Now, if you don't fall in above
- category, just contact me. It won't hurt. I'll let you
- probably use it for free after a written request. In special
- cases I want to discuss things with you person to person. You
- pay the plane and hotel, I'll come and tell you that it is ok to
- use it (you may end up paying the bill for a vacation for me and
- my family in the USA if I think you can afford it ). If you
- are allowed to use it for free and you like the program, send me
- a postcard!
-
- If you write share ware, free ware or whatever so called user
- supported software then I have gained the rights to use it
- as soon as you use my software. If you register people for
- your 'ware' you should register me at once, pronto, without
- delay, NOW !, and if you send people stuff after registering
- you should send it to me, now, pronto etc. This way we don't
- have go through the hassle of one share ware author paying
- the other as nowadays seems the current practise.
-
- Distribution
- ------------
-
- Private persons may give copies to other private persons. You
- may post DUTCHIE and or DUTCHED on a bulletin board as long as
- there is no access fee to get to the DUTCHIE software. In all
- other cases you have to contact me. I am pretty much allergic
- for so called 'user groups' that sell disks for only the copying
- price. Mostly the copying price generates a nice income ! You
- must have a written consent if you are going to put my
- software on this kind of disks ! There will be no problem if I
- have the idea that there is no money to be made on my programs.
-
- INSTALLATION
- ------------
-
- OPUS : Install DUTCHED by setting the information for the
- external message handler in OPUS' control file to DUTCHIE. This
- means that you must have a line like:
-
- External Message_Handler C:\OPUS\DUTCHED.COM
-
- in your control file. Please refer to the documentation
- of OPUS for this. For use with fido we suggest using DUTCHED as
- a stand alone message editor. Invoke the editor from dos
- with the command DUTCHED.
-
-
- SHORT OF MEMORY ?
- -----------------
-
- DUTCHED takes memory, all editors do. If you have little memory
- free you should DUTCHED as a stand alone message handler.
-
- FILES
- -----
-
- You need to install the following files in OPUS or FIDO's root
- directory:
-
- DUTCHED.EXE {main program} DUTCHERR.MSG {File with error
- messages}
-
- DUTCHIE.CFG {Configuration file} DUTCHIE.ARE {messages
- directories + description}
- DUTCHIE.TLT {DUTCHIE's/DUTCHED's title
- screen}
-
- If you want to have the network names displayed then you have
- to compile a node list for DUTCHIE
-
- Compile the nodelist.bbs with the command
-
- DUTCHCOM (NODELIST.BBS in default directory)
-
- or
-
- DUTCHCOM \DIR\NODELIST.BBS
-
- or
-
- DUTCHED NODELIST.BBS USERLIST.DOG
-
- if the node list is somewhere else.
-
- See the documentation for the node list compiler about this. A
- compiled node list enhances DUTCHED a lot !
-
-
- THE INSTALLATION FILE DUTCHIE.CFG
- ---------------------------------
-
- Please see the example in the distribution package, all is
- pretty obvious. The POINT information should contain your
- net/node number.
-
-
- THE FULL SCREEN EDITOR
- ----------------------
-
- Multiple area support:
-
- Multiple areas are supported. DUTCHIE looks for a file called
- DUTCHIE.ARE with the entry of an area on a new line as follows:
-
- \MAIL\THISAREA\ a new area
- \MAIL\MEADOW\ OPUS echo
- \MAIL\COMM\ comm echo
-
- etc., eg the directory of the area and the description.
-
- The editor will show the area at the right of the
- header/body separator. Area 0 is the 'normal' mail area and
- need not to be included. Maximum of 29 other areas at the
- moment.
-
-
- Addresses:
-
- If the external node searcher is enabled in DUTCHIE's
- config file the editor will show node names.
-
- The editor accepts and processes full addresses. Eg you can
- enter node 500/1 or 500/1.12, which means point 12 under
- 500/1. The extended addresses will not show up during normal
- message read, but you can edit them with the message
- C(hange) command.
-
- An empty entry will normally abort the entry procedure.
-
- File update requests/ file request and attached files are
- mutual exclusive. Choose only one !
-
-
- BOMB RUNS:
- ----------
-
- The message editor is now capable of doing 'Bomb' runs,
- that is you can send the same message to a multiple of
- nodes. If DUTCHIE asks you for node to send the message to,
- you can enter a filename proceeded with a '='. (Fido fans will
- remember this one !). The file is a plain ascii file with a
- complete address on every line, like:
-
- 1/0
- 1/1
- 500/24.12
- 136/1986
-
- In this case the TO field is kept the same for all messages.
-
- or
-
- 1/0 Ben Baker
- 1/1 Thom Henderson
- 500/1.1 Henk Wevers
-
- In this case the To fields are different.
-
- DUTCHED will make the messages to all these nodes and show you
- what is going on. Kind of interesting with the external node
- searcher attached ! NOTE: There is no need to leave the editor
- to make a file for node lists. Just make it inside the
- editor and write it to the disk with the Write File command.
- Then delete the stuff with ^Q^E and enter your message.
-
-
- Using names in stead of addresses.
- ---------------------------------
- When entering a NEW message and you have the names of the
- sysops and/or point owners compiled into the node list
- database then entering the TO name will you to search for the
- board/point of the addressee. After entering the name in the
- TO field and hitting ENTER, DUTCHED will look up the closest
- match for the name you entered. Then you will be presented
- with a small menu. The index used is organized first name/
- last name and partially matched are allowed. So if you remember
- that I was Henk something you can enter TO: Henk and then hit
- Enter. The system will show the first Henk that matches and
- you can now search the right one using the left and right arrow
- keys. If you have found me hit ENTER to accept the entry.
-
- If you don't want to use the name the database gave you, just
- hit ESC. The name you have entered is shown again and you now
- can enter the net/node/ point address. This is the way to go
- to the Bomb run facility also. If you want to start the search
- for a name at a different point you should ESC then hit ENTER
- and start over.
-
- If somebody is on more then one board you will able to find
- the right one with the arrow keys very fast.
-
-
- Carbon Copies
- -------------
-
- Want to send a Carbon Copy of a message to others as well. Easy !
- Just enter the message header as you always do. Now enter your
- message. The nodes and eventually the names you want to send
- carbon Copies to should be somewhere in your message. DUTCHED
- will search for lines with a '/' in it and treat that lines as
- addresses for Carbon Copies. The format is the same as that
- for bomb runs. The search for addresses start at line 1 of the
- message until the point where you hit F10. You can hit F10 as
- much as you like when entering a message, the marker will be
- set to the latest point. DUTCHED will generate the Carbons
- when the original message is saved. It will (other than with
- real Carbon) insert the name of the original addressee at the
- beginning of the message.
-
- Example:
- -------
-
- Enter the message header, f.i. a message to Hanno Van.der.Maas.
-
- Now we start the body of the message:
-
-
- -------------------------------------
- This message is also sent to:
-
- 500/24 Reinier De.Groot
- 500/203 Gerard Snoek
-
- and
-
- 500/12 Loek Jannsen.
-
- ----> Hit F10 to set the marker
-
- Dear Hanno,
-
- etc. etc. etc.
- --------------------------------------
-
- That is all there is ! You do not need to enter the names. If
- they are not present the original name is retained.
-
-
- QUOTED REPLIES
- -------------
-
- I am living in Europe. The costs of getting messages here
- is high, so I surely oppose to a broad use of the quoted reply
- option. But in some cases it is handy !. To reply a message
- and be able to quote from the original, use '>' in stead of
- the 'R' command. Now your reply is already filled with the
- original messages with the quoting character in front. Edit all
- out that you don't want (please edit a lot out !).
-
-
- Command Summary
- ---------------
-
- Most commands for message handling are straight forward. Note
- that you can use the PageUp/PageDown and Home keys go through a
- long message. Also the left and right arrows can be used in
- stead of Previous- and next message.

- Misc.

- ^U Aborts most commands.
-
-
-
-
- Some hints, remarks etc. ......
-
-
- SEADOG compatibility:
-
-
- New configuration entry : EDITOR RIGHT MARGIN 60 Normally set
- to 79. But for people who want to be compatible with SEADOG, use
- 60 or so....
-
- This is especially needed to make quoted replies (the '>'
- command) readable by SEADOG owners.
-
-
-
- A note about reformatting, hard RETURNS and other<tm>
- programs compatibility.
-
- All most all editors (including SEADOG's) use two kinds of
- RETURNS with a different internal representation. A so
- called SOFT RETURN is used to tell the editor that a word has
- wrapped because the right margin has been passed. A soft return
- is normally ignored by the display software so text with only
- SOFT RETURNS in it will be displayed with as much words on
- the line as possible fit between the right and left margins.
-
- To mark the end of a paragraph,so the new paragraph starts at the
- beginning of a new line, independent from the actual margin
- settings the paragraph is ended with a hard return. DUTCHIE's
- editor enters a soft RETURN when a word is wrapped to the
- next line due to the fact that the right margin is reached.
- You must have Word wrap on, otherwise you will see very long
- lines with the screen acting as a window over a virtual (bigger)
- screen. DUTCHIE'S editor enters a hard RETURN whenever the ENTER
- is pressed.
-
- This concept is fine for entering normal text. Just enter the
- paragraph without returns, allowing the editor to do the word
- wrapping. End a paragraph with an ENTER so the next paragraph
- will start on a fresh line on other<tm> systems as well.
- Problems arise when you use a quoted return, or use auto
- indent. A soft RETURN wont do here because you will loose the
- inserted spaces at the beginning of the line as the right
- margin is not exactly the same as the one you used when entering
- the text. To overcome this DUTCHIE's editor will insert hard
- returns when: - you use auto indent mode and the previous line
- did not start at column 1. - you have the left margin set to
- something else
- then column 1.
-
- The reformat option (Ctrl-B) normally starts at the end of a
- paragraph, signalled by a hard return. So if you have paragraphs
- with hard returns inserted due to one of above's effects then
- reformatting is a pain. DUTCHIE'S editor has a way to overcome
- this though: Set the right margin to something smaller then
- the end of the lines in the paragraph you want to reformat. Make
- sure the left margin is at column 1. Now reformat. You will
- see that DUTCHED magically removes all hard returns. You can
- now reformat the paragraph with the right margin set to
- whatever you want. Careful though. There is no way to get all
- hard returns back except by reformatting with the left
- margin to something else then column1. Just play around a
- little, you'll get the idea !
-
- To get rid of a hard return on a line, just press Ctrl-B once,
- make sure the left margin is set to 1
-
- To help you out with all this DUTCHED displays some
- information on this in the last column of the screen. If there
- is a '.', the line is empty. If there is a space (nothing
- displayed), the line is ended with a soft return. If there is
- an arrow, the line is ended with a hard return.
-
- AUTO INDENT.
- -----------
- You will find this a handy option in the editor.
- The way it works is this: Start a new line and indent it by
- entering as much spaces as you need. You will find now that with
- Auto indent on the next line (either started by word wrap or by
- entering an ENTER will automatically start in the same column as
- the previous line. Nice for quoting !. To end the auto indent,
- hit ENTER twice.
